Learners:
- How do we stop learners cheating by using AI to do their homework/tests?
- How do we keep learner data safe in a world were AI can use data shared with it for its infinitely growing dataset?
- How do we protect learners from possible bias?
Teachers:
- Teachers can just use AI to do all their lesson plans for them. Is this a good thing, pros and cons.
- It will take the heart and 💗out of teaching.
- How do we deal with ethical challenges?
Leadership:
- Is our schools ready to cope with above challenges
- Do we need specific policies/guidelines in place that governs the use of AI in our schools
- Who will enforce these?

How do we stop learners cheating by using AI to do their homework/tests?
There are other apps that can be used to check whether work was generated by AI and learners should be made aware of the fact that they won’t necessarily get away with it. But, more importantly I think, we should have discussions with our learners about using AI software as tools for learning. If we can create a culture where learners care about learning more than results, problems like this should be few.
How do we keep learner data safe in a world were AI can use data shared with it for its infinitely growing dataset?
We will have to make sure to educate our learners from an early age about using the Internet safely. We can ensure that no sensitive data is given away when we run an activity using AI, but learners need to be aware of the dangers so that they can protect themselves.
How do we protect learners from possible bias?
Again, it comes down to educating the learners about what bias is and how easy it is to be accidentally biased. We can teach strategies or tools that learners can use to check for and rectify biases.

I think so. In my experience, schools are adaptable and resilient enough to face whatever challenges they need to. This doesn’t mean I think AI can be successfully implemented in every school in the country overnight, but I do think schools that are serious about incorporating AI are ready to take the steps necessary to cope with the challenges that may arise.
Do we need specific policies/guidelines in place that governs the use of AI in our schools?
Yes. Just like anything else, there are ways to use AI effectively and ways to misuse it and policies are necessary to ensure that it is mostly used effectively. These policies could help with some of the challenges mentioned above by giving guidelines on appropriate use of AI and on what constitutes as misuse. The policies can also ensure that all parties are aware of the dangers associated with using AI and how to protect themselves.
Who will enforce these?
I think schools should enforce them, with the backing of the Department where necessary, as each school will know their unique circumstances and be able to deal with most issues that arise.
AI is the ‘present’ and it does has it’s place, but it will never replace ‘the human touch’.
