Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a buzzword in the field of education in the last few month. With advancements in technology, AI is increasingly being used in various aspects of education, from personalized learning to administrative tasks. One example of AI in education is the use of chatbots, which can provide students with personalized feedback and support. ChatGPT, a large language model trained by OpenAI, is an example of a chatbot that can help students with their educational needs and can, in effect, do their homework for them! In the TTT AI workshops our ITEs will guide you in exploring how AI can transform the way we learn and teach, and how it can be used to enhance the educational experience for students.
Outcomes for the workshop
- Create awareness about AI and the use of artificial intelligence in and out of the classroom.
- Explore how it can be use to create lesson plans, PowerPoints and do homework.
- Use AI to translate essays and more into other languages (e.g. Afrikaans)
- Pro's and cons of AI
Activity 1
This is an awareness workshop and AI has the potential to change the face of learning...... learners can just "ChatGPT" their homework and essays and hand that in. Teachers need to be aware of the pros an cons of this evolving technology for teaching and learning.
- Open chat.openai.com and type in:
Create a lesson plan about the life cycle of a bee that include the use of technology, and is learner centered. (or whatever you are teaching right now #thetopic)- Is the lesson plan feasible? Would you use it?
- If you gave your learners an essay on #thetopic, see what they would submit if they used Chatgpt e.g. put
Write an essay about the lifecycle of the bee into ChatGPT - How would you tell if they used AI to do the homework.
- How must you change the way you assign homework to stop them just passively using a chatbot do their homeowork?
.
- Copy the ChatGPT generated lesson and ask it to translate it into Afrikaans.
- Example of lesson plan
Activity 2
- How will you tell if homework or assignments were done by ChatGPT or by the learners?
- There are quite a few tools being developed to try and tell if it was generated by a Chatbot, but they are not completely accurate. Copy the ChatGPT essay or lesson plan from Activity 1 and paste it into zerogpt.com
- What percentage did it show up as AI generated?
- Is it always accurate? See articles in our AI Wakelet for more information about AI detection Some more AI detector tools (See last column).
Activity 3
- How can we use AI in the classroom? Read some of the articles in our Wakelet AI collection or ask CHATGPT!!!
- Answer this question in the comments below (every meaningful comment counts 5 pts)
Activity 4
