Robots Meet Culture: Our Journey Begins

When most people think about robotics, they imagine robots performing tasks or solving engineering problems. But what if robotics could also help preserve South Africa's rich cultural heritage?

This is the challenge our team has decided to solve as part of the Robots Meet Culture Innovation Challenge, inspired by the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Future Innovators 2026 theme. Through our project, African Pattern Explorer, we are exploring ways to combine coding, robotics and computational thinking with African cultural patterns to create an engaging educational experience that celebrates our heritage.

Instead of just building a robot, we are creating an interactive cultural pattern treasure hunt using two communicating BBC micro:bits. Learners will use clues displayed on the micro:bit and search for traditional South African pattern cards - including Ndebele, Zulu, Xhosa and Venda designs. Learners will enter the unique code into the Quiz Master micro:bit, after finding the correct pattern. The two micro:bits communicate wirelessly using radio messages to check the answer, update the score, and provide immediate visual feedback through happy or sad icons and sounds.

Our goal is bigger than just creating a fun coding activity. We want to encourage learners to recognise both the meaning and history behind traditional African patterns. We want to help learners develop their problem-solving, collaboration and computational thinking skills. By combining exploration, movement and technology, we hope to make learning about our African pattern history more interactive, memorable and accessible esspecialy for primary school learners.

Shandre is an IT Enabler at Rheenendal Primary School who is passionate about using technology to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences. With a creative mindset and a commitment to innovation, Shandre inspires learners to explore, discover, and develop essential digital skills for the future.

Zethu is an IT Enabler at Thembelitsha Primary School who is dedicated to empowering learners through technology and creative problem-solving. Passionate about education and digital innovation, Zethu encourages curiosity, collaboration, and confidence in every learning opportunity.

Dane is an IT Enabler at Fraaisig Primary School with a passion for integrating technology into education in fun and interactive ways. Driven by a desire to inspire young minds, Dane helps learners build creativity, critical thinking, and digital literacy through hands-on experiences.

Together, Shandre, Zethu, and Dane combined their creativity and passion for technology to develop the African Pattern Explorer. Their project celebrates the rich beauty and diversity of African cultural patterns by transforming traditional designs into an interactive digital learning experience. Through coding, creativity, and cultural appreciation, they inspire learners to explore their heritage while developing valuable STEM and digital skills.

Robots Meet Culture: What is a micro:bit?

What if a device smaller than your smartphone could help you tell stories, solve problems, create inventions, and even bring culture to life?

The BBC micro:bit is a pocket-sized programmable computer designed to make coding and innovation accessible to everyone. Despite its small size, it is packed with features such as LED lights, buttons, sensors, sound, and wireless communication, allowing users to create interactive projects that respond to the world around them.

For the Robots Meets Culture Innovation Challenge, the micro:bit is our creative toolkit, helping us transform ideas into innovative solutions that celebrate culture and connect communities. It proves that even the smallest device can inspire the biggest ideas.

Robots Meet Culture: Why This Challenge?

Exploring African Heritage Through Technology

African patterns represent traditions, tell stories and reflect the identity of different cultures across the continent. Each pattern has a meaning that symbolises values like unity, strength, wisdom, leadership, and community. As technology are growing, many young people are becoming less familiar with the cultural significance and history behind these traditional African patterns.

The African Pattern Explorer has been created to address this challenge we are facing by combining technology, movement, robotics, and cultural education. Using two micro:bits, radio messages, and interactive programming, the project allows users to explore a variety of African patterns and discover their meanings/history, as well as learning about the cultures they represent. By blending tradition with innovation, the African Pattern Explorer makes learning about African heritage fun, engaging, and interactive while inspiring learners to appreciate and preserve their cultural identity.

Our Project Journey

We will transform our idea into a fully functioning African Pattern Explorer by following a structured design process instead of just jumping straight into the coding.

Throughout this journey, we will:

Do research about African Patterns and the cultural history they represent.
Identify the challenges in protecting and sharing African cultural heritage.
Brainstorm various creative technology-based solutions.
Design our African Pattern Explorer using drawings and project workbook.
Build and program our prototypes using the two micro:bits.
Test, evaluate, and improve our design based on feedback we receive.
Present and demonstrate our final project, showing how technology can preserve and celebrate African culture.

By following this design process, we will build 21'st-century skills, coding skills, problem-solving skills, communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking skills. Our end goal is to demonstrate that technology, if used correctly, can be a powerful tool that will help preserve African culture and inspire future generations to learn about and celebrate Africa's rich artistic heritage.

Robots Meet Culture: More Than a Project

This initiative is not simply about building a device.

It is about demonstrating how technology can become a bridge between culture and innovation.

As IT Enablers, we have the opportunity to lead by example, inspire creative thinking, and showcase how robotics can be used for meaningful social impact. We hope that by sharing our journey, ITEs will be inspired, and confident as they develop their own Robots Meets Culture projects.

When Innovation becomes more than technology—it becomes a way of preserving the stories that define who we are.
