Microsoft Word is one of the most important tools that helps teachers design worksheets, tests, lesson plans, and assessments efficiently.

Learning how to use MS Word properly allows you to save time, improve the quality of your resources, and present information in a way that is easy for learners to understand.

What You Should Be Able To Do by the End of This Session

  • Launch MS Word, create a new document and save your document.
  • Typing of text, change font type and colour.
  • Increase/Decrease font size.
  • Make text bold/italics/underline.
  • Insert/create a new paragraph (hard Enter) and a new line (soft Enter)
  • Change page size.
  • Set language to South African English and do a spell and grammar check.
  • Insert a new page.
  • Open a recently used document.
  • Cut/Copy/Paste.
  • Able to zoom in and out of a document.
  • Print a document.
  • Knows at least three keyboard shortcuts for MS Word.
  • Use the Format painter.
  • Highlight text.
  • Insert Superscript and subscript.
  • Create a bulleted and numbered list.
  • Indent text (using tab key or indent buttons).
  • Align text (left, center, right, justify).
  •  Print/Export a document to PDF.
  • Access Help within Word.
  • Insert images located on the machine and from other sources. (Online, local machine, stock.)
  • Customise the wrapping of text around an image.
  • Insert and format shapes (resize, colour, borders etc.)
  • Insert special characters and symbols.
  • Format the wrapping of text around a shape.
  • Create and insert a screenshot into your word document.

Objective:
Enable teachers to open, create, save, and manage documents

Instructions:

  1. Open Microsoft Word from the Start Menu.
  2. Identify key interface components:
    • Ribbon (tabs such as Home, Insert, Layout)
    • Document area
    • File tab
  3. Create a new document:
    • File → New → Blank Document
  4. Type the text: This is my first worksheet as a Digital Foundations Teacher.
  5. Save the document:
    • File → Save As
    • Select a location
    • File name: Practice1LyndiePrins
    • Save and exit
  6. Open an existing document:
    • Open MS Word
    • File → Open → Browse → Select file
  7. Close the document:
    • File → Close or click the X

Objective:
Enable teachers to enter, edit, and format text.

Instructions:

  1. Enter a paragraph related to the school based session planning.
  2. Use keyboard functions:
    • Enter: new line
    • Backspace: delete left
    • Delete: delete right
  3. Select text by clicking and dragging.
  4. Apply basic formatting:
    • Bold
    • Font size
    • Font style
  5. Change text alignment:
    • Left
    • Centre
    • Justify
  6. Copy and paste text:
    • Ctrl + C → Ctrl + V
  7. Cut and paste text:
    • Ctrl + X → Ctrl + V
  8. Adjust line and paragraph spacing (1.5 or 2.0).
  9. Check spelling and grammar:
    • Review → Spelling & Grammar
  10. Apply bullets and numbering to lists.

Objective:
Enable teachers to control document layout for printing.

Instructions:

  1. Change margins:
    • Layout → Margins
  2. Change page orientation:
    • Layout → Orientation → Portrait or Landscape
  3. Add a page border:
    • Design → Page Borders
  4. Adjust paragraph spacing:
    • Layout → Spacing Before/After
  5. Use view options:
    • View tab → Zoom and layout options
  6. Preview the document before printing:
    • File → Print

Objective:
Enable teachers to insert and format visual elements.

Instructions:

  1. Insert a picture:
    • Insert → Pictures
  2. Resize the image using corner handles.
  3. Move the image by dragging it.
  4. Apply text wrapping:
    • Layout Options → Square or Tight
  5. Insert a table:
    • Insert → Table
  6. Format the table:
    • Add headings
    • Adjust column width
  7. Insert a text box:
    • Insert → Text Box
  8. Insert shapes:
    • Insert → Shapes
  9. Insert SmartArt:
    • Insert → SmartArt
  10. Add header and footer:
    • Insert → Header/Footer
    • Include name, subject, and grade

1. Document Setup

  • Open a new document
  • Save using the format:
    Subject_Grade_YourName

2. Heading

Insert a title and apply:

  • Bold

  • Centre alignment

3. Page Layout

  • Insert a page border
  • Ensure appropriate margins and spacing

4. Instructions

  • Type clear instructions for learners
  • Ensure instructions are easy to read and understand

5. Questions

  • Create at least 3 questions based on your topic
  • Apply:
    • Numbering
    • Consistent formatting

6. Table

  • Insert a table for learners to complete
  • Ensure the table is clearly structured

7. Image or Icon

  • Insert a relevant image or icon
  • Resize and position appropriately

8. Text Box or Shape

  • Insert a text box or shape
  • Highlight important information or instructions

9. Header or Footer

Include:

  • Your name
  • Subject
  • Grade

10. Assessment Question

  • Create one assessment question
  • Include:
    • Clear instruction
    • Mark allocation

11. Memo or Rubric (Choose ONE)

Option A: Memo

  • Provide correct answers
  • Include mark allocation

OR

Option B: Rubric

  • Include at least 3 criteria
  • Include levels of achievement

📤 Submission

  • Save your final document in your POE and email it to ZAL
