Mind-mapping in the maths classroom

Welcome to our mind-mapping workshop for maths teachers. We will build on the storytelling workshop by using mind maps to encourage critical thinking, the 4 C's, and all the other criteria to make our lesson DIEP. To remind ourselves what a DIeP lesson is....

  • Do a quick 1 / 2 word brain dump x 3 answering the question:

  • Use the sheet of paper to do a team mind-map for the following topic:
    KILT e-schools
  • There is no right or wrong way to interpret the mind-map
  • Create a physical KILT-e-school mind-map (maybe we should do it outside ?)
  • Provide proof of the process. (Digitise-Scan, photo, video)
  • Share with facilitator (make sure group name is on)
  • Individual learners listen to the story of quadrilaterals. (could use an audio recording)
  • While you listen- do a summary/brain dump of the main elements of the story on your own sheet. Try and do it as detailed as possible. (Pen and paper) Do a "show- up" at end
  • Do a cam-scan of your quadrilateral story brain dump. (Share with facilitator)
  • Create your own mind-map of the topic Quadrilaterals using an digital mind-mapping tool like Bubbl.us (click)
  • Quick demo of how to create/delete nodes. Move/ pinch ect
  • What is the advantage of using a digital mind mapping tool over pen and paper? Discuss in your groups.

    • Not a success- Not always accurate
    • You can create a mindmap using Canva mindmapping templates or the Canva whiteboard with your own elements

  • Mentimeter.com and AHAslides.com
    • Do a collaborative word dump for the learners to sort into a mind map
    • Learners find out for themselves what a mind map is without having to give it to them directly (active vs passive)
    • Wordcloud forms the base for mind-map
    • Could also start with a flippity word list / flash cards

  • Simple mind app (Windows, iphone, Android) (download) (tutorials)
  • Bubbl.us (No registration needed)
  • Cmap (Free, install on computer for offline use or can use online)
  • Take screenshot of final mind map (if not a pro version)
