Robots Meet Culture : Every Drop Has a Culture

Technology can help us save water, but culture teaches us why we should."

When people think about robotics, they often imagine machines replacing people or performing difficult tasks. But robotics can also strengthen communities, protect traditions, and help solve local problems.

This year, the World Robot Olympiad Future Innovators theme, Robots Meet Culture, challenged us to think differently.

Our community in Knysna has experienced water shortages. Families have had to change the way they use water, reminding us that every drop matters.

Long before smart technology existed, communities across South Africa valued water as a shared resource. Looking after rivers, dams and springs was everyone's responsibility.

Our project combines this traditional respect for water with modern technology.

Meet the Ubuntu Water Guardian — a smart robotic system built with the BBC micro:bit that encourages families and communities to save water while celebrating our culture of sharing and caring.

Technology doesn't replace culture.

Meet the Team:

• Chandre 🤖: Learning to be confident with robotics + "bubbling"- that sounds like she’s getting into the flow and letting her ideas pop! Robotics confidence is a whole vibe. Proud of her for putting herself out there.
• Phumela aka Phumie 🧱: Lego expert, loves to laugh and talk. That’s the energy every team needs. Lego experts are low-key problem solvers - she probably builds the wildest things AND keeps everyone hyped.

Understanding the Problem Why Water?

Water shortages have become one of the biggest challenges facing Knysna.

Climate change, growing communities and increasing demand mean that every litre counts.

Rather than simply telling people to save water, we asked ourselves:

How can technology encourage people to change their behaviour?

That question became the foundation of our innovation.
