Empowering Teachers Through ATP Tools Using Excel

Target Audience:

School Teachers (All Grades)

Duration:
1 hour 30 minutes

Objectives

To equip teachers with the skills to use Excel as an ATP (Annual Teaching Plan) support tool, enabling them to record marks, track learner progress, analyse data, and integrate technology effectively into teaching using TPACK and SAMR principles.

WORKSHOP FLOW USING DIEP + TPACK + SAMR

ATTENTION

I will start by capturing interest by showing them the video to watch and Activity will follow

Activity

  • Show a short scenario Teachers spending hours recording marks manually.
  • Ask: How many of you still calculate totals by hand?
  • Show a mini-demo: Change one learner’s mark in Excel → total updates automatically.
This immediately shows the power of Excel + ATP tools

ENGAGEMENT

Let teachers explore Excel tools hands-on.

Do Activity with them

Teachers open an Excel sheet and try:

  • Entering learner names and marks
  • Using AutoSum
  • Using Sort & Filter
  • Creating a simple bar graph
  • Using Conditional Formatting (e.g., highlight marks below 50%)

Goal: Teachers realise Excel is a powerful ATP tool to make work faster

STRATEGY (TEACHING STRATEGIES USED IN THE WORKSHOP)

Strategies

  1. Demonstration – showing Excel tools step-by-step.
  2. Guided practice – Teachers follow along on their devices.
  3. Collaborative learning – Teachers do a 5-minute group task.
  4. Guide Practice – moving around helping them.
  5. Reflection – Teachers share what they learned.

Demonstration

I will be showing teachers how to use Excel tools such as entering data, using formulas (SUM, AVERAGE), creating graphs, and applying conditional formatting.
Teachers watch first so they understand what to do and how to do it.

Guided Practice

After the demonstration, teachers will follow along on their own devices while I will be guiding them step-by-step.
This helps them build confidence and practice the skills immediately.

Collaborative Learning

Teachers will work in small groups for a 5-minute group task.
Each group creates a mini mark sheet using Excel.
This encourages teamwork, shared learning, and problem-solving.

Guided instruction

As teachers work, I will move around the room giving support, answering questions, and assisting those who need extra help.
This ensures all teachers progress successfully, regardless of their skill level

Reflection

At the end of the activity, teachers will share what they learned, difficulties they faced, and how they plan to use Excel and ATP tools in their teaching.
This strengthens understanding and connects the skills to real classroom practice.

TPACK Breakdown

Technological Knowledge (TK)

Teachers learn how to use:

  • Excel
  • ATP planning tools
  • Functions (SUM, AVERAGE)
  • Sorting, Filtering
  • Data visualization

Pedagogical Knowledge (PK)

Teachers learn:

  • How to use technology to teach better
  • How to assess learners faster
  • How to track performance easily

Content Knowledge (CK)

Content focus:

  • Assessment tasks
  • Marking
  • Term Plans
  • ATP coverage tracking

TPACK Integration Example:

Using Excel to track ATP completion and learner marks in one sheet.

This shows technology + pedagogy + content working together

SAMR Framework (How Excel transforms teaching)

S – Substitution

  • Teachers replace manual mark books with Excel.

A – Augmentation

  • Use formulas (SUM, AVERAGE) to improve accuracy.

M – Modification

  • Use conditional formatting to analyse performance.

R – Redefinition

  • Create graphs, dashboards, and reports that were impossible without technology.

F. CONSOLIDATION (Wrap-up + Practice)

Activity

Teachers complete this task:

Create a class mark sheet for 10 learners using Excel.
Include: SUM, AVERAGE, Sort, Conditional Formatting, and a graph.

Reflection

Ask teachers to complete one sentence:

  • Something new I learned today is
  • I will start using Excel for
  • One ATP tool I understand better now is…

WORKSHOP OUTCOMES

By the end, teachers will be able to:

  • Use Excel confidently as an ATP tool
  • Track lesson coverage quickly
  • Capture and calculate marks automatically
  • Use technology to enhance teaching
  • Apply TPACK and SAMR in their classrooms
