Cheaper data options for ITEs (and everybody)

As committing to a 24 month service provider contract seems very expensive, let's investigate what options can be cheaper and not bind us into a lengthy 2 year contract. As IT enablers we need to be able to connect to our facilitators via Whatsapp at all times during the school day. We also need data to do our Edunova assignments after hours, if we did not get time during the school day, or if the internet did not work in our school lab.

We also need to buy a black back-up T-shirt, keep some taxi money aside for ITE training days, do our nails, and provide for ourselves on the stipend we get. How can we make our bucks go just a little bit further?

Did you know that buying little bit of data at a time, to keep us going, can work out very expensive indeed? Let's see:

If you load up with 500Mb of data every 3 days , your monthly cost will be
= 30/3 x R69 = R699 per month for 500 x 3 x 10 = 15 GB of data. If you do a few Netflix and a few tiktoks, it could even end up being R1000! You could go for a bigger pay-as-you-go monthly package which will work out about between R349 for 6GB to R699 for 30GB (MTN as example). So it is always better to invest in bigger packages which bring the cost of the data down.

If you take out a 24 month contract deal (for which you need 3 month's bank statements and credit clearance) then you can bring your data cost down even more. In this MTN deal you can get 100GB (basically) for R299.

So how can you benefit from a bigger data package without the contract commitment? The best deal I have seen is from Afrihost, which runs on MTN data provision. Lets see what a 15 GB package will cost:

You can have a month to month arrangement and change on a monthly basis if you see you use more or less with a handy app and out of bundle options. If you already have an MTN sim card, they just autoload the data onto your existing number. To find out more about how to get connected see their site: https://www.afrihost.com/airmobile/data-only

Ps I am not getting any commission!! Also it is important to check that you have good MTN signal. (Sorry Concordia!!)
