How to create Mad Libs using Flippity

Mad Libs is a word game where one player can cue another for a list of words to substitute for blanks in a story; the substituted word can have a humorous effect when the resulting story is then read aloud. This game can provide an engaging ways to teach kids about nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. I t can also be used to reinforce grammar, reading comprehension, sentence construction, and vocabulary skills.

To create a Mad Lib:

Open your web browser and go to the Flippity website at https://www.flippity.net/.

  1. Click on the "Mad Libs" template from the list of available templates. This will open a Google Sheets template for Mad Libs.
  2. Make a copy of the template by clicking on "File" in the top menu and selecting "Make a copy." Rename the copy to a desired name for your Mad Libs game.
  3. Customize the Mad Libs template by modifying the sample story and replacing the placeholder words with parts of speech that you want the players to fill in. You can create as many stories as you like by adding new sheets to the Google Sheets document.
  4. Once you've customized the template, go to the Flippity website (https://www.flippity.net/) and click on the "Get the Link Here" button on the Mad Libs template page.
  5. A new tab will open with a URL. Copy this URL from the address bar of your web browser.
  6. Go back to the Google Sheets document you created and share it with others by clicking on the "Share" button in the top-right corner of the screen. Make sure you give editing permissions to the people you want to play the Mad Libs game.
  7. Share the copied URL from Flippity with the players. They will open the URL in their web browsers to access the Mad Libs game.
  8. When players open the URL, they will see a form generated by Flippity. They need to fill in the requested words based on the parts of speech you provided in the Google Sheets template.
  9. After all the players have filled in their words, you can reveal the completed Mad Libs story by going back to the Google Sheets document and selecting the appropriate sheet with the filled-in words.
  10. Share the completed Mad Libs story with the players and enjoy reading the hilarious results!
