Aims of this session:
- To learn how to use Wakelet (as we need to assist the teachers to use it)
- To learn more about conflict management.
- To create a collection of conflict management resources (using Wakelet)
As ITEs and in our lab and in our personal lives, we often have to deal with conflict situations. How do we do it without getting emotional, judgmental or angry? We have to at all times represent the values and professionalism demanded by Edunova, KILT and our schools.
Lets start off by creating a collaborative collection of Conflict Resolution resources
- Install a Wakelet extension in your chrome toolbar. Click here and click on Add to Chrome. (An extension adds a little icon in your chrome address bar that you can click on to do stuff (e.g print or add a site to your Wakelet collection)
- Join our communal collection space for Conflict Resolution by inserting your name and signing up to Wakelet (its free)
- Now you are ready to start using Wakelet for curation of knowledge!!!
- Search Google for "Conflict Resolution" and look for good articles that will explain
- What it is
- How we can handle conflict in a healthy way.
- What kinds of conflict we encounter in the workplace.
- If you have found a good article that explains what it is, bookmark/curate the article into our collection!
- When you are on the website article, click on the Wakelet extension at the top right of your Chrome bar (either the little puzzle piece or the visible icon) .
- When you click on the Wakelet icon, the page will go grey and you will be presented with your collections--> click on Group collections and choose Save to our communal Conflict Resolution collection. Your resource will be added to the group collection of resources!!
- Scan through some of the articles to answer the previous questions:
- What is conflict resolution?
- How we can handle conflict in a healthy way?
- What kinds of conflict do we encounter in the workplace?
Scenario:
The ITEs were given a group assignment where they have to identify a problem in their community and a solution. They were four members per group and Elmozane, Geradon, Yulin and Pumela were assigned to the first group. While busy with the assignment Elmozane, Geradon and Yulin out of comfortability decided to only speak Afrikaans. This made Pumela feel left out. She tried to communicate her discomfort and lack of understanding with the rest of the team, but it fell on deaf ears. When they had to present in front of their peers, Pumela gets frustrated because her teammates tell Nandi that she was uncooperative.
Answer the questions in the comment section below. (Add your name and surname, email and school -as the website)

How could this conflict have been avoided?
-
it could have been avoided if they had chose to speak and communicate in English.
-
By choosing to speak a language that everyone in the group is comfortable with and being more inclusive of Phumela.
-
The group could spoken English only because they knew that Pumela do not understand Afrikaans.
-
as a group they should have all agreed on speaking English only before even doing the presentation
-
They should have spoken English instead of Afrikaans.
-
In a situation like the one described Phumela should express her frustrations with the group, more than once. If the problem persists than she should go to her supervisor and explain the situation and how unhappy she feels.
-
The conflict could’ve been avoided by stopping the other three learners to speak in a language all of the group members understand
-
Before the group had a chance to present their work Phumela should have gone to her facilitator and get help regarding her problem.
-
By , having an instruction that says when discussing a group presentation they should all communicate in English to avoid not hearing each other .
-
1) communication barriers
By speaking a universal language that all of them could understand- English
2) power and role struggles
By not communicating properly another problem arises that had to to with the roles each one of them had to play in the group.
3) social and racial groupings4)

What could Pumela have done differently?
-
If the team only could have decided to speak English a language that everyone can speak and be comfortable with.
-
Pumela could have spoken to her team members by addressing the situation and share her issue on the problem. She could have asked them to reconsider the decision by speaking Afrikaans instead of English.
-
-
Told Them From The Start That She Speaks A Different Language
-
Pumela should have told them that she doesn’t understand afrikaans so that they can stop speaking in Afrikaans.
-
Reported her difficulty with the group to Nandi before hand.
-
She should have told her facilitator about the situation.
-
Nothing. She already tried to communicate her discomfort with them.
-
Pumela should have addressed to her fellow group members that she is not comfortable with them speaking afrikaans
-
She could have spoken to her team members and tell them her her issue with speaking Afrikaans . Then they can reconsider by changing the decision on speaking Afrikaans instead of English.
-
She should’ve addressed the situation with them and with the facilitators

Do you think it is okay to exclude people out of comfort? Give a reason for your answer.
-
No it is not. The other person will feel bad .
-
Absolutely not! Its rude.
-
Never, no one likes to feel excluded. Especially in a work environment.
-
No, i don’t. I think taking the next person’s mother language into consideration is important, and shows respect.
-
No it is not okay. It makes that person feel bad and left out
-
No, because i believe that don’t do to others that you wouldn’t want to be done to you , because you as person would also feel left out if Pumela started speaking in her home language
-
No , because you might feel as if they are discussing about you .
-
No because language is a important format of communication and its always a barrer between people so its wrong. I will prefer to communicate in a international language.
-
it is not ok to exclude someone out of comfort because if the same happens to you as a person you would not be happy if it happens to you
-
-
How do you think Nandi should handle the situation?
-
She should talk to Yulin, Elmozan and Geradon and tell how phumela felt and they should use a language that everyone understands
-
Nandi should have a group training on communication and diversity
-
Nandi would have called a meeting for the team .She would have asked them what the problem is .She would hear them out and start to give them solutions to the problem.
-
Nandi should talk to both parties and ask the reason for them excluding Pumela and try to convince them to include her by speaking a language she is comfortable with
-
-
By speaking English instead of Afrikaans.
-
They could have said that they do not feel comfortable with their group members because of the language barriers.
They could have also compromised as a group to accommodate all of them. -
this could have been avoided by listening to Phumela’s problem and actually react on the problem.
-
The three other members should have bear in mind that they are a diverse group and that Phumela do not speak and understand Afrikaans. They should have used English as medium.
-
Elmozane, Geradon and Yulin should have been more considered of Phumela that does not understand Afrikaans.
-
Yulin , Elmozane and Geradon should not have communicated in Afrikaans. They knew Phumela is not Afrikaans
-
if Pumela’s team, mates communicated in english
-
To address the situation by speaking to her team members by telling them that she feels uncomfortable because they are communicating in a language that she do not understand and feel comfortable with. Asking them that they should rather use English as the medium because she also wants to participate and do her part.
-
She could had treated the situation better before getting frustrated .
-
If the team worked together and had not excluded anyone.
-
Absolutely not, when working in a group its important to communicate as one.
-
No because that means they won”t do their part in the team because they feel like their group members don”t respect them.
-
This was a very productive activity and it gave me another perspective of conflict
-
Personally I do not think that it is okay to exclude others just because one is comfortable with something doesn’t mean the next person is. One should always keep in mind that we are different with different capabilities and to accommodate others as far as possible.
-
she should punish them
-
Nandi should call a meeting where all the members should attend. She must first of all tell Geredon, Elmozane and Yulin that it is nor fair and acceptable to speak or communicate in a language which everyone is not comfortable especially when working in a team. Nandi should also then tell Phumela that there are different ways to address situations and that one cannot get frustrated before even speaking to the guilty party.
-
This conflict would have been avoided if they would have spoken English in the first place .because they have to understand that not everyone understands Afrikaans and that needs to be respected and vice versa for us who do not understand isi XHOSA
-
Phumela could have put emphasis to her problem and make them listen and do things diffrently before things go badly
