What is a mind-map?

Speed dating can also be used by students to share expert knowledge about a topic with several peers. In this form, each student becomes an expert on a particular task or skill. Then, once the students are ready, they begin to "speed date," teaching each other and challenging each other. The students change partners every few minutes to solve new problems or answer new questions. If they need help, they ask the "expert" on that problem or question to share an explanation of how they arrived at the answer.

How can we use mind-mapping in the classroom?

Read some of the articles that will give you great examples and  ideas about how to use speed dating in the classroom

To actually experience this strategy in a real live environment is the best way to prepare for when you will be implementing it in your classroom. Below we will give you some background information for ehttps://drive.google.com/file/d/160IeV-ksp7dMTK89unFh984rRj0UQn2Y/view?usp=sharingach of the activities, to inspire you in preparing your own lesson plans!!

Activity 1: Speed dating blog Icebreaker

Objective of activity?

This activity reminds teachers about the previous strategies. It  introduces the time aspect of online speed dating.  Asking participants to reply to 3 other teachers in the online blog discussion, is a quick way to get participants to get to know one another and to share quick information and ideas on an ongoing basis going forward.

The Blog comments work well as you can structure the conversations using questions

Technology used?

WordPress
WordPress comments are easy to use and it is threaded as well, which means that you can reply on replies in a chronological way thereby not losing the thread of the conversation.

- Word
If you do not have wordpress, you can use the computer lab were the learners have to type their answers on open word docs.

In this activity the topic is "Speed dating Revision. We therefore start with  groups discussion (kind off like jigsaw expert groups, to set the scene and help participants to recall the various strategies. We are basically modelling the creation of the lesson plan with them as active participants. We then put them in a speed dating scenario where they have to collect the other colours from the other strategy experts thereby collection and revising subject content in record time. As they have to explain their strategy 3 times, they really get to know it well!

Technology used?

- Video recorder, audio recorder, camera
By letting them take a photo of their colour dates, they can remember better which strategies they have not done yet. Making recordings of the explanations can also help recall. As an extension, you can ask them to do a tik tok or Instagram reel of their strategies- re-enforcing it further. Letting them transcribe it using transcription software not only demonstrating how easy it is to transcribe stuff, it again re-enforce the concepts. Lastly, creating word clouds from the transcribed material shows if the essence of the strategies were captured.

Activity 3: Create a WOW lesson plan

Proof of implementation;

To be able to earn your implementation points and strategy badge, you need to provide proof that you have used the strategy with embedded technology, in your classroom, with your learners.

  • Your completed lesson plan (scanned word document/ completed lesson plan idea
  • Photos and/or videos of your learners participating in the lesson activities (using mind-mapping)
  • Any worksheet/ presentation /PowerPoint that you used during the lesson
  • Upload your evidence to your TwT teacher folder and let your facilitator know that you have uploaded (lessonplan@kiltelearning.co.za)

    1. Learning stations. It shows you various ways you can do certain topics. thus learners do find it Interesting and enjoyable

    2. I enjoyed the jigsaw module. It was quite interesting to learn about the PHET simulations. It showed me various ways in which I could use simulations as part of my teaching😁😁

    3. Speed dating: it helped us to be able to share the information with each other as well as getting to bond with each other which stimulates our minds.

    4. I enjoyed the story telling. learners have loads of stories to share, guiding them into the right direction made my classroom a fun a place to be.

  1. I liked the mind mapping
Where we had to write a short text so we used it to organise our ideas.
And it worked well for the planning process

  2. Mindmapping using technology to plan, organize and develop lessons. Helps with strategies creating unique lesson plans that learners enjoys and participates

  3. Story telling
It is a nice and fun strategy to use in the classroom to help learners disscus different tipes of pictures or objects in the class to create a story

  4. I love to use storytelling withy grade 1 kiddies… They love being filmed while retelling stories or while role playing or telling their news. The learners use my phone to film and they direct and produce their own videos. They love using technology and have been using it more at home too.

  5. Speed dating..
A quick way to learn more about other people.
I am new to the group.

  6. I enjoyed learning mind-mapping and learning about all the useful apps and websites and learning stations as I saw how much the kids enjoyed it.

  7. I really enjoyed the jigsaw method what I’ve realised was that learners it gave students experience with small group learning skills
Have students fill out a graphic organizer in the “home group” to gather all the information presented by each learner.
