Game Based learning and Gamification are strategies that we can use to bring some fun into our lessons. Even though it does not necessarily  have to involve technology, technology can bring a whole more dimension to your fun-filled lesson. Let's play!

What is Game based Learning and Gamification?

Game-based learning can be defined as lessons which are competitive, interactive, and allow the learner to have fun while gaining knowledge. The best game-based learning has three main elements.

  • Competition: Keeping score motivates players and provide an assessment of their performance. Players do not necessarily need to compete against each other, they can compete to reach a goal or work together as a team to overcome obstacles and problems.
  • Engagement: Game Based Learning provides "intrinsic motivation" to keep going (Lepper and Cordova, 1992) by challenging players, and creating curiosity and interaction.
  • Immediate Rewards: Players receive victory or points, or feedback, as soon as goals are accomplished.
